As hundreds of elementary kids rolled into Pohl Gym on Tuesday, MSMS students were standing in neat rows awaiting their arrival with one mission in mind: to spread the joy of science.

The 22nd annual Science Carnival hosted by MSMS featured demonstrations in areas of Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.

“The Science Carnival is an opportunity for elementary kids to see some really cool science, elementary school teachers to see how to do some really cool science, and an opportunity for our MSMS students to teach how to do some really cool science,” states MSMS Physics professor, Dr. Charles Vaughan.

MSMS students performed as Guides to steer the children to all the various stations, as Greeters to welcome the guests, and Presenters to explain the principles of science. From Inertia to Water Lock, Hydrophobic/ Hydrophilic, Camouflage and even the Metric System, each station proved to the younger students that the magical reactions were not actually magic, but the wonders of science.

Sutton Klein, senior presenter, expresses, “The kids may not remember every detail of what they learned, but at the end of the day, they are learning to associate science with having fun and that’s really what matters for a lifetime of learning.”

To bring together the memorable event, pets of veterinarians from the Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine gifted the elementary kids with their friendly presence and snuggly personalities. For the first time, the veterinary school had their own station at the Carnival to inform the audience about animal anatomy and behavior.
