The MSMS French Club raised $243 from crêpes sales in a Feb. 12 fundraising event that also allowed students to sample French cuisine.

The event took place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the class periods of French I & II, and this timing gave anyone with a lunch period a chance to buy a crêpe and hear from club members. The students who operated the event were given an extra challenge: speaking in French the entire time.

“It was hard, trying to sell crêpes in French, but fun,” senior and French II student Rhianna Drake said. “We got a chance to learn about parts of French cuisine and culture that we wouldn’t normally get.”

Crêpes came with up to four toppings: whipped cream, bananas, Nutella and strawberries. The prices were $2 for a crêpe with whipped cream, plus $1 for each added topping.

“Hearing them all talk in French was interesting,” junior Joey Knight said. “And the crêpe was really good!”

MSMS French teacher Lori Pierce is sponsor of the French Club and worked with the students to organize Crêpe Day.

“[French Club]’s goal is to share a part of French culture, in this case the food,” Pierce said. “I want to give a shoutout to all the students who made Crêpe Day happen.”

Pierce said the funds will be used to benefit her French students.

“All of the students who have taken at least three semesters of French are eligible to join La Société Honoraire de Français. The Crêpe Day sales pay for their membership costs,” Pierce said. “The rest of the funds can go to outreach, activities or whatever the club members want.”

La Société Honoraire de Français is an honor society for high school students studying the French language.

“It’s official recognition that all my French II students can put on their resumes and applications,” Pierce said. “Our next French Club event will be the ceremony inducting those students into the society.”

For French Club, Crêpe Day was a success at both raising money and sharing delicious French cuisine with MSMS. However, the club isn’t done for the year, with new meetings coming up along with the La Société Honoraire de Français induction ceremony.
