What do snow cones, mud volleyball, water balloons and water slides have in common? They are all tools that MSMS students use to defeat the torrid Columbus heat. The Residential Life Staff orchestrated a water-filled day at the MUW volleyball court for the new juniors and returning seniors last Saturday, when going home was not an available option.

The volleyball court seemed to attract quite a crowd with its scenic mud pool and numerous other diversions. The looming water slide undoubtedly stood out in the field as well, with students eagerly climbing the ladder to splash the heat away or to just sit and take in the view at the bottom of the slide. In another corner, a group of students was determined to create an all-out water balloon fight with a giant pile of colorful balloons.

“My favorite activity at field day was definitely the water balloon fight. Nothing is as fun as throwing water balloons at people,” said junior Christina Comino about the day’s activities.

Although the whole theme of the field day was centered around water, other choices and games were also available throughout that weekend. There were soccer games, football toss, Frisbee, a coffee shop talent show, a poetry session, a jam session and movies and video games. However, this great weekend did not come together with the snap of a finger.

“There were weeks of planning that went into this event. We had to fill the mud volleyball pit along with setting up tents, the snow cone machine and the cotton candy machine. We also had the water slide. We worked with MUW recreation to make sure the mud volleyball was a success,” said Mr. Hansel Jackson, Frazer Hall Director.

The effort that went into setting up these activities was evident, and some say the staff outdid themselves at this year’s field day. Bri Lancaster, a senior who experienced field day last year as well, compared the two.

“There wasn’t very much to do except Frisbee and most people didn’t stay very long last year. This year was much more fun because there was water everywhere, which always makes everything pretty much better, and more people actually came and stayed there, which was cool. I feel like a lot of the juniors got to know their seniors better, and vice versa,” Lancaster said.

Not only was this event beneficial for wellness and the social aspect of life, it was also a form of relaxation. Mr. Jackson said, ” I think it helped everyone relax because we know school can be very strenuous for some of the students, especially the juniors because this is a challenge for them. We wanted everyone to have fun, enjoy the day and let their inner child run free for a few moments.

“We wanted to show that MSMS is more than a school, we are a family. Everyone enjoyed the day and I would like to thank Dr. Whitley, Coach Scott, the Res Life Staff, Faculty, Emissaries and students that helped on this day.”
