Student Spotlight: Greg Billingsley

Rebecca Chen, Senior Cartoonist, posing as a writer for today I guess

The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science houses a boy of extraordinary talents. He traded his hometown of Belzoni, located in the Fertile Crescent, for the deluxe fourth-floor suite of the high rise that is Frazer Hall.  Who is this boy? What does he do? How does he do it so well? Well, ladies and gentlemen and other non-conforming genders, I will be answering all these questions in this very spotlight. In fact, if you take a gander at the title of this article, you can see that I am writing about the man, the myth, the legend: Greg Billingsley.

As a member of the Model UN Security Council, Greg represented the country Nigeria during his junior year. At the Mississippi Model Security Council Competition, he brought home the “best resolution” prize for the school. This year, he returns to the Council, though it is not confirmed which country will have the honor of having his representation.

Greg Billingsley is often found in his natural habitat, the computer lab, specifically on the computer closest to the window on the first row. If engaged with music, he may get up and dance. This is the typical behavior of the Greg. Greg was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule for an interview.

Rebecca: “So, Greg, What are your hobbies? Like, what do you do in your free time?”

Greg: “Hm. I like to read.”

Rebecca: “Is that it?”

Greg: laughs. “I don’t know, I can’t think of anything else!”

Rebecca: “Come on Greg, pretend like you’re on a TV show and I’m Jimmy Fallon. Tell me something interesting.”

Greg: “Well, I wouldn’t be on a TV show unless they paid me, and they woulda had to pay me a whooole lotta money.”

So pretty much Greg isn’t interested in this interview because I didn’t pay him.

Greg: *reads my computer screen as I type* “I mean, I mean I’m interested in this interview because,” *motions to me*, “you know, because of you.” Laughs.

Aw shucks Greg. Flattery will get you nowhere.

Many may not know this, but Greg is the great creator of the dance move “the pancake”. Both Greg and “the pancake” are a staple of an MSMS dance.

Rebecca: “So, Greg, how did you go about creating ‘the pancake?’”

Greg: “Well, one day-“*dramatically jazz hands* “I’m just playin’. So you know how you mix up the batter for pancakes- have you ever made homemade pancakes?”

Rebecca: “Sure.”

Greg: “So you’re mixing the batter, and you gotta put it in a circle on the m-, the um, the uh… stove! And you gotta let it cook. And then you take the spatula, and you flip it. *proceeds to slowly “pancake* “You get the motion?”

Rebecca: “Yes, yes. Truly magnificent.”

Greg: “If you’re confident enough, you can get two skillets, you got one on the left and one of the right, and you flip em at the same time!”

Greg proceeds to do the “double pancake”. He is so talented.
