MSMS Student Government Association announced the elected senators for the 2024-2025 academic year on Aug. 30. Senators are responsible for writing bills and resolutions to better the MSMS community. Elections occurred on each floor of Goen and Frazer Hall.
SGA senators aim to implement meaningful changes that address student needs and improve campus life.
Junior John Broome, Frazer senator, said he wants to preserve the environment at MSMS.
“I want recyclable trash cans for all empty water bottles on each floor,” Broome said. “I would [also] like to get the gazebo back in boundaries after 6:30 p.m.”
Junior Jake Heisler, Frazer senator, said he looks to make academic changes and redefine wellness credits.
“I plan to pass a resolution that requires teachers to have quizzes graded and returned to the students before a test,” Heisler said. “I also want to expand what counts for wellness. Our wellness seminar credits are essentially a mental health bonus, so I will propose that there are other activities [to replace] wellness seminar credits.”
Senior Teddy Lai, re-elected Frazer senator, said he is “super excited to be able to continue working in Senate.” Reflecting on last year, Lai passed two bills.
“One [bill] was to add lights to the volleyball court behind Goen and Frazer Hall,” Lai said. “I also want to continue a bill on changing wellness [hours] and work service to an online format to make [them] more accessible.”
SGA President Carys Peden organized all the floor elections and said she wanted to host more events in the future.
“I want to set up a club carnival. All the clubs will host their event in the Greenspace, and it will be a fundraiser for the community. [Alternatively,] I will set up an honor core, which is the legislative branch of SGA,” Peden said.
Peden wrote one bill last year regarding a new privilege plan for juniors with more benefits than the Premium Plan but fewer than the Outstanding Plan.
“Juniors can’t access the [Outstanding] Plan, because it was only [available] for seniors, which I thought was unfair,” Peden said.
She proposed giving students flexibility in choosing their days off, as long as they stay within the limits set by their privilege plans.
When asked about the essential qualities of a senator, SGA Secretary Teagan Lotwala said engaging with the student body is crucial.
“Being passionate about [SGA] and interconnecting with the other students at MSMS help a lot,” Teagan said.
Offering advice for newly elected senators, senior Grace Ann Courtney, re-elected Goen senator, and Lai said to observe meetings and be confident in presenting bills.
“There are many intricacies in how the Senate works, and you should ask your senior senators questions,” Lai said.
