Outreach opportunities abound at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, and this week was no different! Kaye Truitt, a chemistry teacher at MSMS, led a group of 15 students to New Hope Middle School’s Family Science Night.

This trip, supervised by Dr. Elizabeth Morgan, Dr. Bill Odom, Dr. Charles Vaughn,  Josh Crowson, and  Kaye Truitt, was spurred by New Hope Middle School teacher Tracy Davis. Truitt said, “She told us that most parents have negative feelings toward science because of mandatory science fair projects; she hopes that seeing science in action from MSMS students as well as other presenters from MSU and other agencies will help parents and students to enjoy the discovery of science.”

MSMS did this by modifying preexisting posters and activities from the annual Science Carnival and Traveling Science Carnival that MSMS sponsors. However, new activities were also presented. Truitt described, “Fish in a Barrell,” as, “a population density exercise,” and mentioned that “Skaters and Ballerinas”  teaches angular momentum. Robotics students also had their share of the spotlight.

“Our hope is that students at New Hope will catch our students’ enthusiasm for learning and specifically, for learning science principles. We also hope that more students will learn about the great opportunities available to them at MSMS and consider applying to MSMS when they are old enough,” Truitt said.
