After two years, K-Pop group Super Junior is back with their eighth album, “Play,” released on Nov. 6.

Released on Super Junior’s twelfth year together, the album contains many musical attributes from their years of experience. The thirteen-track beauty has an overall retro vibe with many electronic tunes and dance beats. The eleven-member band has only nine vocals present throughout the album since two members are currently in their two-year military service. “Play” brings together the eleven members, no matter where they are, to display their skills and friendship.

Starting off with the first track and title track, “Black Suit” is a high beat, electronic dance song. In this song, Yesung’s vocals are one of the highlights and brings the whole song to a different level. The best part of the song is the bridge that is intensified by the upbeat swing backtrack.

“Scene Stealer” is a heavy bass song with a vibe similar to Bruno Mars’s “24K Magic.” The vocals in this song are complemented very well by the background. The song has an addicting beat and can make anyone bust a move. The bridge is very short along with slight soft vocals in the background of the chorus. The rest of the song is filled with rap and bass tracks.

The next song stands out in the album full of hip-hop and dance. “One More Chance” is a catchy ballad with a beautiful acoustic guitar accompaniment about giving a lover one more chance. This song also refers to Super Junior’s fans not leaving and giving them “One More Chance.” Full of melancholy and sentimental lyrics, the song triggers feelings without even understanding the Korean lyrics. This track was released a week before the rest of the album as a promotional track with an alluring music video. The pop-rock ballad is composed by member Donghae, and the rap in the middle is written and sung by Eunhyuk.

The sixth track, “The Lucky Ones,” is another song that stood out in the album. It is different from the typical love song with its unchanging tone and a neutral tone. The chorus is what made it stand out; the different voice harmonizing with the music gave it a magical feel. The harmonizing can make goosebumps appear on anyone’s skin from the sincere declaration of love.

“Too Late” is another special song with a powerful beat partnered with inspiring lyrics. It tells the story of a horrible breakup and how it is too late to go back to the past where they loved each other with all their hearts. The background is filled with a light melody on the piano and then joined with a light-hearted beat on the drums. With a slight electronic feel, the song increases in intensity from the beginning to the end, holding the listeners for a ride through the two lover’s delightful past.

The last song in “Play” is “I do,” which is a soft ballad about a man’s love for his significant other. With sincere lyrics, such as “With the butterflies we felt by just our fingers touching. I promise you, I do baby,” the man promises to love and cherish his partner for the rest of eternity. Yesung’s voice is once again a highlight of this song and brings out the piano chords in the backdrop. The song starts off really slow and somber, it gradually becomes more upbeat leading to a rap and beautiful bridge.

These songs all combine to create Super Junior’s eighth album. Even though there are members missing in the production of this album, Super Junior gave it all they had to make their fans happy. The album overall is amazing and beautiful. Even though there are songs in the album that are not very prominent or special, they are still worth listening to. There is something for everyone in this album from soft ballads to hip hop and dance music. “Play” is one of Super Junior’s best albums and hopefully they will keep coming out with more music.
