The MSMS wrestling team had mixed results in French Camp on Nov. 8 against Oxford High School and French Camp Academy but showed improvement at the Tiger Tussle meet on Nov. 15 in Arlington, Tenn., where they competed against Mississippi schools Oxford, Corinth, Lewisburg and Hernando, along with other Tennessee schools.
At the Nov. 8 meet, seniors Enoch Clardy, Shaw Prewitt, Nina Weinstein and Owen Williams each won both of their matches.
At the Tiger Tussle, Frazer juniors Dietrich Hedgpeth, Michael Baggett and Gabriel Ellingburg won first, second and third place in the 147-149-pound, 145-157-pound and 169-177-pound beginner weight classes, respectively. Seniors Ross Chism, Williams, Clardy, and Prewitt won third, first, second and third place in the 107-120-pound, 135-144-pound, 152-156-pound and 158-170-pound weight classes, respectively.
Senior Goen wrestlers Annabelle Banda and Weinstein, along with junior Goen wrestler Harper Hipp, each placed second in the 111-113-pound, 142-149-pound and 129-140-pound weight classes, respectively. Juniors Chloe Chaisson and Lillian Treadaway placed third in the 119-123-pound and 121-128-pound weight classes, while Alissa Hull and Kyra Means placed fourth in the 113-117-pound and 231-235-pound weight classes.
Clardy received the Wrestler of the Week belt from coach Jerry Brauer for showing outstanding effort and improvement in matches during the Nov. 8 meet. Hipp was awarded the belt for her performance during the Tiger Tussle.
Clardy said several MSMS wrestlers impressed him on Nov. 8, although overall, Oxford ultimately proved stronger.
“[Williams] did very well … he surprised me. I was proud of [Banda]. [Treadaway] also did very well. She went against a former state finalist …Oxford was just better that day and pinned more people than we did,” Clardy said.
Treadaway said the losses were important and that the team is conscious of what it needs to work on.
“The team as a whole [did well] at taking in stride our various degrees of success and failure … it’s a trial by fire — part of the process,” Treadaway said. “Everything I thought the team needed to work on from that match, we have absolutely worked on this week.”
Chism said the team members new to the sport now know what wrestling is like and will perform better at future meets.
“[The wrestlers] got plenty of experience that they needed wrestling at [Arlington],” Chism said. “It seems like we are going to continue to improve.”
