On Wednesday, October 11, the MSMS senior class participated in the Math Superstar event.

Children in second to fifth grade from local schools in surrounding counties were brought to the MSMS campus to be a part of the Math Superstars. The grade school children were divided by grade and placed in buildings throughout campus. Each senior was assigned a small group of students who they led throughout the day. Math problems and brain teasers were given to the children, while the seniors assisted them in solving these problems. The children participated in math competitions and team building exercises.

The students, MSMS and elementary, had a great time with this. Senior Devon Matheny says, “I thought it was very rewarding to lead a group of three second graders and lead them through  the day and show them what is was like to do team building exercises and to do different problem solving task to interest them in mathematics.”

The Math Superstars event was intended to give a new perspectives on math to children surrounding MSMS. This gave these children exposure to having fun with math.

“It was a great experience for the MSMS student to work with the younger kids and reach out to the community in general. The kids all had a great time, and it was awesome for everybody involved,” says senior Drew Lindsay.
