Last week, juniors were required to attend one of three sessions of MSMS 101. Mrs. Brown discussed the importance of summer programs at the meeting, then a few juniors shared their own summer experiences.

Mrs. Brown stated that “the worst thing you can do is to go home and lay around your house all summer and be bored.” Besides being a great learning experience, summer programs demonstrate to colleges work ethic and the desire to learn.

During the Thursday session, four students, Kaleigh Leiva, Chris Colley, Vivian Van, and Braeden Foldenauer, talked about summer programs they attended in the past.

The speakers attended a variety of summer programs, so students should not have much trouble finding a program that interests them. Kaleigh traveled to Arizona State University to participate in a week-long medical program, Chris spent four weeks at MIT Beaver Works progamming cars to run through courses, Vivian did research in MSU with the MSU Medical Scholars program, and Braeden participated in humanities courses in the University of Michigan.

Besides providing an educational experience and looking good on a college resume, preparing for summer programs can actually help with college applications. “Many of the essays I wrote for the program have been my college essays,” Foldenauer commented. Plus, many of the courses offered at summer programs are at college level, providing a taste of what college classes will be like.

At the end of the program, Mrs. Brown announced that MSMS will be sending out emails to students about potential summer programs, so keep a lookout to apply for any that might interest you.
