The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science held its annual New Student Orientation Day on April 30. This yearly event is where MSMS invites the Class of 2018 to partake in the future preparations for their first day of school. These events involved picking their classes, meeting their teachers and taking placement tests. The students were aided in making these choices by Dr. Heath Stevens and Dr. Tylon Crook, the MSMS counselors.

Lisa McGee, MSMS Goen Hall Receptionist, stated, “We were so delighted to meet the new 2018 class.”

The future MSMSers and their parents also had the opportunity to join the MSMS PLUS Club. The Class of 2018 were invited to watch an array of performances from several MSMS clubs. The first performance was from the MSMS Blu Diamondz female step team. The Class of 2018 were also invited to watch the Blu Knights step team featuring three of their members.

Their ex-President Timothy Spivey said, “I’m sorry about the shortage of members, but everyone else had prior engagements.”

Following this was a performance by the Voices in Harmony (VIH) choir singing “Swing Low“ directed by MSMS senior Nikita Harris. While these events took place the Class of 2018 parents were given a run-down on the do’s and don’ts of residential life living proctored by Dr. Germain McConnell, the MSMS Executive Director; Latoya Bledsoe, the Goen Hall Director; and Hansel Jackson, the Fraizer Hall Director.

Many questions about regulatory medications and paraphernalia were directed to these school officials; however, Dr. McConnell answered with an simple but powerful explanation, “We try to get the students what they need.”

These events lasted from morning to evening and provided the Class of 2018 with a better understanding of the MSMS way of life.
