The MSMS wrestling team lost to Starkville High School on Nov. 18, falling in a closely scored meet, 39-36.
While the Goen team’s point count fell short of Starkville’s, its members delivered strong individual performances. Juniors Alissa Hull and Lillian Treadaway won their matches in the 120-pound and 126-pound weight classes, respectively, and Treadaway earned a win in an extra exhibition match. Elissa Wang and co-captain Nina Weinstein did not compete due to forfeits from the other team in the 107-pound and 145-pound weight classes.
Weinstein said the final score does not reflect the team’s true progress this season.
“I know [Goen] lost by points, but we also had to forfeit a lot of weight classes, which added up,” Weinstein said. “As far as the girls’ performance went, I think everyone has made significant improvement since the beginning of the season.”
The Frazer wrestlers lost by a small margin of 3 points, with seniors Ross Chism, co-captain Enoch Clardy and Shaw Prewitt winning their matches in the 144-pound, 157-pound and 175-pound weight classes, respectively. Junior Michael Baggett won his match in the 165-pound weight class.
“It came down to the wire. We were one bonus point victory from winning,” Co-Captain Enoch Clardy said.
Baggett said practice completed outside of training has contributed to his progress.
“Our team practices moves and conditions daily, which is the main factor in preparing for a tournament, but I also drill moves in my own time,” Baggett said. “Personal effort is what makes a win or a loss in wrestling.”
Treadaway said she took pride in the team’s performance, even with its small size.
“I think we did really [well]. I’m still proud of how we wrestled even though we didn’t win,” Treadaway said.
