Twenty-eight new Student Government Association senators are stepping into their roles after student body-wide elections were held on Aug. 24.
President John Broome, Vice President Jake Heisler, Secretary Aanya Banga and other election proctors selected by the SGA officers prepared the elections, which occurred on each floor of Goen and Frazer Hall. Elected senators are responsible for passing bills and resolutions that improve student life on the MSMS campus. The officers and elected senators said they are excited to create change this calendar year.
Junior Sen. Anya Rai said she joined SGA to make a positive impact at MSMS.
“I’m really excited for the upcoming bills, and I know a lot of senators have amazing ideas,” Rai said. “A bill my fellow junior senators and I may propose is not to require wellness seminars if students have a large amount of wellness hours.”
Junior Sens. Nora Foster and Lexi Freeman took unique approaches to their election speeches. Foster rapped, while Freeman read a poem to constituents.
“Be different. If [your floormates] remember your speech, you’re going to get elected,” Foster said. “You just have to be memorable.”
Senior Sen. Jo Jackson is a senator for her second year. She filled a vacant Goen Senate seat by giving her speech to the Senate after the first election. The Senate elected her, and the number of Goen senators increased from 15 to 16.
Broome said SGA hopes to further inform the student body about Senate by implementing new cabinet positions, including senior class officers and SGA officers liaison, elections commissioner and press secretary. The jobs are held by Eduardo Gonzalez-Orozco, Christian Butler and Rebecca Sun, respectively.
“The SGA officers want to incentivize the entire school to know what bills are being presented and which senator is presenting them,” Broome said.
Sun, who is also a graphics editor for The Vision, said SGA plans to launch a monthly newsletter that will cover the bills presented at each weekly meeting.
“My goal is to connect the student body with the Senate more by involving The Vision and the Senate together,” Sun said.
Sun and Broome said they will improve the junior class officer and senior class officer elections based on the SGA election process.
“The elections took more than two weeks of getting meetings set up and making sure proctors knew what they were supposed to be doing,” Broome said. “It showed us what we need to improve and what we were capable of doing with a set amount of time.”
