The soccer season has just begun and excitement is high. Both teams’ first practice was on Monday, and their first games will be on Nov. 7.

Even though the boys’ team failed to make it to the playoffs last year, team captain Kobe van Someren hopes to go further this year. “My expectations of the year include setting a foundation for the team next year by working closely with the juniors, making sure the seniors have a fun last year of playing soccer, and making playoffs and going as far in playoffs as possible. The team is more developed than the team last year so I expect a better season and a better record,” Van Someren said.

The juniors in the team are also excited for the season, with junior Jacobo Moyo stating “I feel like we’ve done a lot of work; I’m pretty excited, and I feel like we might make it far.”

The girls’ team is actively preparing for the season as well. Coach Chuck Yarborough says, “We’ve got some experienced senior leadership along with new players who are committed to learning. Through the first week of practice, it’s clear that the players want to work hard to become the best players they can be. That’s a great place to be as the practice season kicks off.”

The November 7 matches are a part of the Golden Triangle Regional Classic and will be at the Columbus Soccer Complex. The MSMS Boys will play Byhalia at 8 a.m. followed by the girls’ match at 9 a.m., also against Byhalia. The teams face West Point opponents with the boys’ match at Noon followed by the girls at 1 p.m.
