Students Examine Jackson’s Storied Architecture

On Wednesday, March 21, Mr. Chuck Yarborough took students to Jackson, Mississippi for an architectural field trip. This field trip allowed students to tour important historical and architectural sites in Jackson.

Students worked with architectural historians from the Mississippi Heritage Trust as well as the Mississippi Department of Archives & History.

Students took a walking tour of downtown Jackson with Architectural Historian Todd Sanders and visited buildings such as St. Andrew’s Cathedral, City Hall and the Old Capitol building.

Students also visited the Governor’s Mansion and had lunch at the Mississippi Heritage Trust office.

“We packed a lot into one day, and I think it was not only extremely valuable educationally, but it was a lot of fun,” said Mr. Yarborough, a social studies teacher here at MSMS.

For most students, though, the best part of the trip was visiting the Mississippi State Capitol building and speaking with Senators Chuck Younger, Briggs Hopson and J.P. Wilemon. They also got a chance to meet representatives Steve Massengill and Greg Haney.

Senior Sydney Matrisciano had this to say, “The architecture field trip was amazing. When it didn’t happen last year, our class collectively assumed it never would. Thanks to Mr. Yarborough’s hard work organizing the trip this year, we had the opportunity to meet with an architectural historian, several curators, Mississippi Heritage Trust workers, as well as representatives and senators. Each person involved in this year’s trip went out of their way to help us, and we as a school are so lucky to have this support when we take our learning outside of the classroom. The capitol building is a beautiful example of Mississippi’s architectural heritage.”
