Prospective Juniors Get First Taste of MSMS Life

Prospective juniors came from far and wide to MSMS on Saturday for their interview day. Over 150 prospective juniors crowded outside of Hooper Academic building, excitedly discussing the day’s coming events.

The schedule consisted of a variety of events, beginning with registration followed by the Group 1 interviews. Interviews usually consisted of two different interviewers asking the applicants a range of questions, such as describing their personal lives and why think think they should be accepted into MSMS.

The students then took a placement test and wrote an essay. The tests are a mathematics or foreign language test. The math placement test determines which classes they will be admitted to once they arrive at MSMS and the foreign language placement test determines proficiency in the language that they studied at their home school. They test strengths and weaknesses and help the faculty determine how much they know.

Throughout the day, prospective students were able to walk around and talk to the juniors and seniors that are already at MSMS.

When asked about her interview day before being admitted to MSMS, junior Ashley Nguyen said, “So my interview was about a year ago, and I think I actually relate to some of the juniors and how they feel.  I was super nervous, and I was kind of closed off, but I had a good time. I think that I should have opened up more and been calmer.”

The prospective students can ask the current students questions about MSMS, and the current juniors and seniors got to know them and to see the perceptions they have about MSMS.

Many of the prospective students had a lot to say about MSMS and their perceptions of it. “I think MSMS is a great school and a great opportunity, and before coming here I was very nervous and scared,” Corrin Dixon, prospective junior, stated.  Many students have perceptions about MSMS and everything they do.

Whitley Hester and Anna Milton, prospective juniors also commented on their perceptions of MSMS.

“I think MSMS is a great opportunity that I’m hoping I get into.  It it full of great people and teachers, and it will be a great opportunity if I get in,” Hester said.

“Well my sister went here about four years ago, and I’ve been following her and watching how she has grown through MSMS and how her experiences were like and how much she benefited from this residential high school, and I think this is going to be a great opportunity for me, and I think that living here and being surrounded by people who have the same goals as you. That’s really important in the long run” Milton said.

“MSMS is a great school for upcoming students who are interested in mathematics and science, and I feel like everyone in the tenth grade should take their chance and apply. It is a good opportunity,” said prospective junior Nickolas Horton.
