An Interview: Meilun Zhou Remembers Science Bowl and Looks Forward to A New Season

Navin Solomon, Interrogator

Meilun Zhou, current senior, was on the school Science Bowl team last year. He was put on the secondary team, or B-team to help prepare the A-team for competition and to practice for this year. The Oxford team in the state semifinals defeated the A-team, but then the B-team wound up beating Oxford, surprising many and securing B-team a chance at nationals. The National Department of Energy sponsored the MSMS B-team to represent the state of Mississippi at the national competition in Washington D.C.

NS: What place did you take at the competition?

MZ: We didn’t place in the top 2. Or 50.

NS: Alright, do you plan to join the team again this year?

MZ: Yes, it’s a great learning experience.

NS: What do you plan to do better this year?

MZ: We hope that as seniors we’ll have more experience buzzing in and have a better reaction speed than last year.

NS: How do you think the team did as a whole?

MZ: Well we didn’t place at all so we hope to improve on that this year too.

NS: How was the trip to D.C.?

MZ: The plane ride to from GTR to Atlanta was… not as expected. There was 10 people on the plane and 2 of them were the pilot and co-pilots.

This year’s Science Bowl coordinator is Dr. Elizabeth Morgan and team selections are currently occurring every Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
