Victoria Aveyard weaved a beautiful tale set in a dystopian world surrounded in war. The world is separated into two classes: the Reds, commoners with red blood, and the Silvers, the elites with silver blood, which gives them extraordinary powers. These powers include healing, mind control, mimicry, telekinesis and much more.

Mare Barrow is a seventeen-year-old Red who pickpockets in order to get her part of the income for her family. She lives with her parents, sister, and her three older brothers who are at war with the northern Kingdom of the Lakelands. Mare does not have a job or special skill like her sister, which puts in her the spot of being recruited for the war. However, by meeting a special someone in a tavern, Mare ends up changing her life completely. Now, these changes lead to a huge unrevealing of a secret that completely changed her life.

Through these changes, Mare is able to teach the readers that justice should always prevail in the government, and if not, the people have a duty to fight and rebel against the government. Mare also shows that power is not corrupt, but the people make corrupt the power. Throughout the whole book, the underlying messages of love, revenge and sacrifice show that the love of a family is very important to accomplish gigantic goals and dreams.

Mare’s story continues in three more books. Book two is the “Glass Sword” and book three is “King’s Cage.” Book four has yet to be released but will be released sometime in 2018. Victoria Aveyard’s beautiful style of writing and character development has made “Red Queen” a #1 New York Times Bestselling novel.

I came in contact with this book through a fellow book lover. At first, I had my doubts about the book. Since dystopian novels are really popular, many of them are not as good as said to be. This book surprised me because it is Victoria Aveyard’s debut book and is not yet as popular as other dystopian novels.

“Red Queen” is the perfect book for the dystopian craving, with the backstabbing and need for revenge. This book is perfect for that day that you just need away from school and reality in general because none of us have silver blood and are able to change our grades with a snap of our fingers.
