The Blue Waves tennis team won 5-2 in a home match against French Camp on March 4.

Despite the absence of two starting Frazer players — juniors Daniel Van and Riyaz Mathews — MSMS won all its matches except Frazer singles and mixed doubles. Both the Frazer doubles teams won, with juniors Teagan Lotwala and Sanders Hutson winning 6-1, 6-2, and juniors Yash Malhotra and Ramon Munoz-Montiel winning 6-2, 6-4.

“I think we performed well overall. There were instances where I could have played much better, such as putting shots away, making smarter decisions and just being able to stay calm and collected and not getting overwhelmed during our matches,” Malhotra said. “The team has been getting chances to play with each other and get comfortable so we can win more matches, despite not having a complete boys’ team. Hopefully, we can get them back as soon as possible.”

The Goen double teams performed similarly, with senior Rhianna Drake and junior Nora Ruth Scott winning 6-1, 6-4, and juniors Darshi Kher and Zuxia Li winning 6-0, 6-0.

“I think I played on the safer side. I didn’t play badly, but definitely could have played better,” Li said. “I think the major setback as a team is inconsistency, and in most cases, the reason for losing. For me, my setback is both inconsistency and my short temper. Tennis is challenging both physically and mentally. In the future, I hope to learn to enjoy the game and not let the game get the best of me.”

Goen junior Adair Gaines won her singles match 6-1, 6-3.

“I think I could’ve played a little better, but I’m happy with the score overall,” Gaines said. “I played really strongly in the first set with many offensive shots and strategic placement in the outer court. I’m proud I never lost my serve, which I was worried about at the beginning of the season, so I already see a lot of improvement. I had great coaches who helped me finish the second set decisively.”

Senior Sai Narla and junior Antanae Shelton played mixed doubles and went to tiebreakers in the first set before losing 5-7, and then 0-6 in the next set.

MSMS also won its second district match against Eupora High School on March 19.
