In 2022, rumors began circulating about Shakira’s boyfriend of 10 years and father of her two children, former Spanish professional soccer player Gerard Pique, being unfaithful to her when photos of Pique with 23-year-old Clara Chia started to circulate. While at the time the scandal was just a rumor, Shakira and Bizarrap’s new song “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” confirmed Pique’s affair.

“Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” is not Shakira’s best song. Although she has established her dominance as an influential Latin artist, her music during the last two years has been quite stale. Shakira’s songs have barely breached the Hot 100, something she used to accomplish with ease. However, “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” broke the trend by reaching the top of the charts and breaking Spotify’s record for the most streams for a Latin song in a single day.

As with most of Shakira’s songs, the melody and lyrics are repetitive but catchy, but not great enough to deserve an award. The reason it went viral is because of its obvious innuendos sprinkled all over the song toward her now ex-husband Pique and his new girlfriend Chia.

The diss track explicitly drops both Pique’s and Chia’s name For example, “Tiene nombre de persona buena, Claramente es igualita que tu,” which translates to, “She has the name of a good person, but clearly she is just like you,” refers to Chia by discretely saying her name. In Pique’s case, he is mentioned multiple times, but the most popular line was “Yo solo hago música perdón que te salpique,” which translates to “I’m only doing my music sorry if I tarnish you.”

A fan-favorite line is “Cambiaste un Rolex por un Casio, Cambiaste un Ferrari por un Twingo” that translates to “You changed a Rolex for a Casio, You changed a Ferrari for a Twingo,” which essentially says Pique’s new girlfriend is a downgrade from Shakira. Pique dramatically responded by driving a Twingo to work the next day and wearing a Casio watch in a recent interview.

Shakira has always released songs about her relationship with Pique, including “La Bicicleta” or “Me Enamore.” While the overall majority of reactions are in support of Shakira, some are criticizing her for using her relationship as a way to gain popularity in spite of her children’s father’s image.
