Horror Movies: The Scariest Part is Deciding to Watch

Most people think that horror movies are fun to watch, however I beg to differ. Horror movies, in my opinion serve no purpose other than to satisfy the crave of adrenaline, but even if that’s so, what else are roller-coasters for?

I have never exactly liked the idea of going to the movies, expecting to be entertained by something that will keep me up at night. Of course, I do agree with the fact that no opinion is superior to all—least of all mine. However, I feel like horror movies are not only a waste of time, but they could also be related to paranoia in even the safest situations.

In some severe cases, people who watch horror movies can develop anxiety and grow paranoid of people they are close to. For instance, there are some movies that portray children to be “possessed” and (for lack of a better phrase) do terrible things to their parents. This can be very traumatizing for parents to watch, even if it’s not real. This is especially more apparent when watching a horror movie about something that is realistic, or that is based on a true story (supposedly).

I think the only way for horror movies not to have an effect on someone, they must be exposed to it at a relatively young age, but this can be even more traumatizing. There is no solution to the problem that is horror movies. Many people believe different things regarding horror movies, which also depends on the person.

Psychologically speaking, horror movies can also produce irrational fears and/or interest in the paranormal or demonology, both of which are unhealthy for the mind. This is also many religious people are against horror movies as well.

I think horror movies in general are not only bad for one’s mental health, but also physical health. When frightened, people’s “fight or flight” responses kick in, which increases heart rate and blood pressure, and if this happens too suddenly, it can get to the point where it can put your body at risk for a cardiac arrest. This is highly unlikely, but it is a possibility. And a possibility is all I need to stay away from horror movies.
