Vivia Davis: Dandy at Vandy

Corrin Dixon, Staff Writer

Vivia Davis is a graduate of The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science with the class of 2018. She is currently in her first year at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. While a student at MSMS, she was a part of many different clubs and leadership activities that helped her to become the young woman that she is today. Vivia was an Emissary, a mentor at the Columbus Boys and Girls Club and a tutor at Palmer Home for children along with several others.

“I also sang in Voices of Harmony, and chemistry being my favorite subject, I was in chemistry club, a chemistry lab assistant, and I was also a peer tutor for the chemistry department at their nightly tutorials,” Davis said.

Furthermore, Davis was a camp counselor in the MSMS Summer Enrichment camps in the summer of 2017. During that week, students who met Vivia loved the way she talked about the school, the environment and the great experiences she had throughout the week. That in turn encouraged them to apply to MSMS.

At Vanderbilt University, Davis was influenced by her love for chemistry here at MSMS and is now pursuing a very similar field of study. Vivia is majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in Spanish. After college she plans on going to dental school and becoming a successful and well-rounded orthodontist.

“Being a member of the Chemistry Club and being a chemistry lab assistant strengthened my interests in Chemistry. Also being a member of the National Spanish Honor Society influenced my minor in Spanish,” Davis said.

Davis also participates in several extracurricular activities that she enjoys at Vanderbilt as well.

“I am member of the Black Student Association, Minority Association of Pre-Health Students Club, and the Life’s a Stitch Knitting Club.”

The two years she spent at MSMS allowed her to gain more knowledge and skills for the future, at college and beyond, but the best part of it all was the lifelong friendships and relationships that she made while attending the school.

“My roommate from MSMS is still my roommate here at Vandy. I still keep in very close contact with my suitemates.”

Vivia closed with some great advice about moving forward in school and doing well while here. She said, “ I say learn how to manage your time wisely at MSMS. It will help you tremendously in college.”
