Diabetes is undeniably a grim issue in our society, holding the title for the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. To raise awareness of this plaguing disease, the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi hosted a walk/run for community members Oct. 16 at the Columbus Riverwalk.

The fundraising event was a method of gathering contributions from the public to make the funding of informational school programs, grants and medical supplies possible. Not only did MSMS students attend the event in hopes of giving back to the community, but they also enjoyed a healthy hike on the picturesque paths of downtown Riverwalk.

With a great turnout of participants ranging from babies in strollers to dogs in costumes, it is safe to say that the program was a success. MSMS junior Mariana Strawn expressed her delight in participating, “It was amazing to see so many people come out and support the cause. It was a nice experience for me.” Those who crossed the finish line of the 5K walk were rewarded with a vibrant “I’m Someone’s Hero” medallion and choices of nourishment such as diet drinks, fruits and water.
