MOVIE REVIEW: Suicide Squad

Starring: Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Will Smith.

Official Movie Summary:  It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super-Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself? [Warner Bros.]

Acting: Throughout the entire movie, this aspect continued to show and became the saving grace for this film. To put it bluntly, Suicide Squad’s acting is outright fantastic. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn rose above all my expectations, and Will Smith as Deadshot was also excellent in his own right. The rest of the cast was decent enough; however, I feel that were too many characters in the movie to begin with. This influx of characters really took away from the true stars of the film: Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Another problem is the Joker and/or Jared Leto. Hyped up vastly in the excellent trailers of the movie, the end result was little more than an afterthought in the grand scheme of the movie itself, with very little scenes showcasing the Joker arising in the movie as a whole. While this is partly due to the grievous editing of the movie as a whole, Jared Leto cannot be excused for what was a mediocre performance in general. Overall, the acting of Suicide Squad was decent enough, with a few blemishes all around.

Plot: This is where the movie really began to show its true colors. The plot of the movie was dreadful, with too many plot holes to even count. Not even their near constant (and obvious) use of special effects could distract me from just how lacking and overblown the plot of the movie. Instead of utilizing the Joker as the one true villain, he was basically an afterthought for the entire movie. Instead, they put Enchantress(Cara Delevingne) as the true villain; however, she and her brother’s motives for world domination were baffling and unoriginal. The action sequences, while not having any particular defining moment, were entertaining enough. Overall, the plot of Suicide Squad is a disorganized, half-hearted joke that only confirms that this movie was a missed opportunity of something that could’ve been magnificent.

Overall: Even with the incredible acting performances of Margot Robbie and Will Smith, Suicide Squad is an absolute embarrassment to the movie industry, highlighting what its become and that developing a cohesive and consistent plot is only optional in the eyes of DC.
