This week we will share the story of the well-known Aurelia “Scooby” Caine, who is a senior at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. She is from Cleveland, MS where she originally attended John F. Kennedy Memorial High School before she came to MSMS.

Caine thinks MSMS is a special place. “MSMS is a very special place because it serves as a school and also a home. At the beginning of junior orientation, they tell you that you’re all going to be family, and you find that hard to believe. Once the year really gets to going, it’s not hard to believe at all! MSMS is so special because you come in alone as a naive junior and leave with lots of college preparation and a big family,” Caine says.

She is inspired by many things, but feels as if her mother is her biggest inspiration. “My mother is my biggest inspiration. She is a single parent and still makes a way to give me everything I need and most of what I want. She stays on me 24/7 because she wants me to be the best that I can, and I love her for that,” Caine explains.

Her favorite things to do are play sports, hang out with friends and make people laugh. She also likes to shop from time to time, especially for shoes.

“To say the least, I have a deep love for shoes. My collection mostly consists of Jordans, Nikes, UGGs and Toms,” Caine states.

Aurelia’s favorite quote is “Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak.”

Her favorite television shows include Grey’s Anatomy and Prison Break. She is a fan of Lil Wayne and Drake when it boils down to her favorite music.

Caine is eager to graduate in May. “I am super excited about graduating in a few months. At first, it’s not exciting to receive a piece of paper after 12 years of school, but the closer it gets, the more important it is. I’m going to miss my classmates, but I know everyone is going to be successful as we go our separate ways,” Caine says.

Caine looks back on why she came to MSMS in the first place, and how has this experience affected her views. “When MSMS was introduced to me, I was instantly interested in the amount of courses offered here. There are classes ranging from Animal Physiology to African American History to Discrete Math. One of the biggest reasons for attending MSMS is the fact that I am able to take these courses I didn’t have the chance to take at my old school. They give me the opportunity to introduce myself to new concepts and give me an idea of what I may want to study in college,” Caine elaborates.

Aurelia is the Vice President of Blu Diamondz, the secretary of Black Students Alliance, and treasurer of Future Business Leaders of America. She is an Admissions Emissary and the office assistant. She participates in Mock Trial as a witness and is the Sports Editor of The Vision. Last semester, Caine job shadowed a physical therapist, but this semester she is currently working under the District Attorney. She also volunteers daily as a tutor at the community center and as a chemistry tutor for fellow students.
