Mariat Thankachan, Co-Editor-in Chief

Anjeli Hoskins is one of many students gracing the halls of the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. Originally from Pascagoula, Anjeli currently resides inside Goen’s historic walls. While paving a way for herself at MSMS, she has met some interesting folks like Christina Comino and Jessica Smith, the roommate.

I asked for an interview and it went something like this:

Mariat: Let’s start from the top. Where were you born?

Anjeli: I was born in Mobile, Alabama.

Mariat: Oooh, how do you like Mississippi?

Anjeli: I’d rather not be here, but I like the weather.

Mariat: Gosh. How did you learn about MSMS?

Anjeli: There was a girl in my school that used to go here. I just remember hearing a lot about a math and science school, so I applied at that point.

Mariat: What about MSMS do you like?

Anjeli: I like being independent and how it’s much like a college environment, so you’re more in charge of yourself than you would be as any other high school student.

Mariat: Did you have any fears about coming here?

Christina from the back: Chicken nuggets.

Anjeli: I don’t like chicken nuggets that much. No, not really.

Mariat: Ummm, what’s your favorite color?

Anjeli: Purple.

Mariat: Let’s see, what are your future plans?

Anjeli: To go to college…and to have a job.

Mariat: Nice, nice. What do you want to be?

Anjeli: I have no idea. That’s a great question.

Mariat: Do you know where you want to go to college?

Anjeli: No.

Mariat: What are your interests?

Anjeli: I don’t want to be in anything in any humanities. That can’t happen, that’s dead. But I’m also scared of biology–I’ve learned it’s too much. Chemistry is way better, but yeah.

Mariat: What are your favorite classes here?

Anjeli: Cal I was amazing. Top-notch, great class.

Mariat: Why?

Christina: mumbles something roasty. I just came after Anjeli’s life.

Anjeli: We’re on record so. I like the material in the class. The class is so fun, how applicable it is to life was very useful unlike any other math classes I’ve taken previously.

Mariat: What all do you do at MSMS?

Anjeli: I’m a leader of CRU this year, worship Jesus Christ aka Jesus Club. Gotta hype that.

Mariat: How would you compare your junior and senior year?

Anjeli: Senior year, I’m more on top of myself. I feel like one important thing to know is to surround yourself with people who are going to motivate you to do better.

Jessica from the back: laughs hysterically

Christina: No salt intended.

Mariat: I’m so confused.

Anjeli: Just being around people who wanna do better and who have motivation to be somewhere in life makes me want to do the same.

Christina: You might want to edit out some of the things I said.

Mariat: No, this is like a conversation writing piece thing. Everything’s going in.

Anjeli: Not everything’s going in.

Mariat: Riiight

Mariat to Jessica: What do you think of Anjeli Hoskins?

Christina: Did you just mispronounce her name?

Anjeli: I’ve been called worse things before, like Anjelly.

Mariat: Umm…what are your thoughts on having her as a roommate?

Anjeli: Be honest.

Jessica: She’s great? We get along well. She’s not super messy.

Mariat: What do you admire the most about her?

Jessica: Umm…

Christina from the back: Chicken nuggets.

Mariat: What does that mean? Christina, you must want to say something.

Christina: Yeah, I think Anjeli is great! Okay. Every time I come in here looking to waste time, she’s doing work or she’s already done her work. And I’m like, I guess I should do my work now. If I have done my work, we just hang out and she’s really fun to be around. Her doors are always open. (looks to Anjeli) You’re the best!
