January 22, 2018
Kaye Truitt was awarded the title of 2017-2018 MSMS Teacher of the Year, nominated and voted by students and faculty members.
Truitt teaches Organic Chemistry, Properties of Matter, Chemical Reactions and AP Chemistry at MSMS.
“I’m very honored to be chosen. There is an incredible faculty at the school, and it’s great to be considered important in that group. I think that this is some of the best faculty that you can find in the state of Mississippi.” Truitt explained.
Truitt is a lifelong Mississippian, born in Pascagoula and raised there until she came to The Mississippi University for Women as a freshman in 1980. Truitt graduated from MUW with a degree in Physical Science, primarily Chemistry, and later with a Master’s in Education.
Truitt originally came to MSMS in 1989 as a secretary in the Counseling Office. After working two years, she chose to stay home with her daughter. After teaching in local schools for 11 years, Truitt returned to MSMS in 2011.
Along with Truitt, the other two nominees for the title included Shae Koenigsberger and Margaret Mary Henry.
Koenigsberger teaches Foundations of Mathematics, AP Calculus I, II and III.
“In my opinion, I feel like Mrs. K is an amazing teacher. She cares so much about each of her students and she’s there to help you even when things get hard,” junior Mary Hayden Patterson stated.
Henry is a foreign language teacher at MSMS, teaching Spanish and Russian.
“I’ve come to know Ms. Henry as one of the finest examples of MSMS staff. She embodies the four ideals as a teacher. Ms. Henry is observant, thoughtful and determined to help when needed. Ms. Henry pushes her students to excel beyond the classroom,” senior Sydney Matrisciano said.
After receiving MSMS’s honor, Truitt is currently being considered for the Mississippi Teacher of the Year Award.
