The MSMS Lady Waves defeated Winona 8-0 in a Class 2A Region 4 matchup Friday night at Winona.  

With junior Madison Wypyski scoring 3 goals, Amber Means having 2 goals and 3 assists, MacKenzie Umanzor having 2 goals and Erin Williams having 1 goal and 2 assists, the Lady Waves cruised to victory. Senior goalkeeper Gabby Kennedy had 3 saves to preserve the shutout.

“Tonight was a great team effort on the road in a key district match,” said coach Chuck Yarborough. “The girls connected passes and finished consistently against a well-coached Winona squad.”

Yarborough believes that his team showed life in all phases of the game.

“Our defense was stout once again. Seniors Sarah Swiderski and Harlynn Robinson frustrated the Lady Tigers attack all night,” Yarborough said.

With the Lady Waves improving to 5-1-1, 2-0 in district, the team is gathering confidence that they will advance to the playoffs.

In the nightcap, the MSMS boys were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and scored 2 goals in the final two minutes of the second extra period to win 3-1.

Throughout the course of the game, senior captain David Thaggard scored 2 goals, and senior captain Daniel Leetran scored 1 goal and had an assist.  Senior Gary Nguyen and Yousef Abu-Salah and junior Kaelon McNeese also had assists in Friday’s match. Junior goalkeeper Advaith Sunil had seven saves.

“I was proud of our team’s overall play,” said coach Morri Mims. “At times the team got disorganized, but the boys were able to pull it back together in overtime. Our efforts in practice are paying off.”

MSMS fans have seen them improve over the course of the season, and hope the win Friday night is a sign of things to come for the Blue Waves.

“The game was not perfect, but we pulled out with a win.  This win showed that, even if we are not at our best, we can win games and show the other schools that we are meant to be here.  Hopefully, we can grow as a team and use this win as motivation for the future. Let’s hope we win at Nettleton this Tuesday.  Go Waves!” said one of the senior captains, Yousef Abu-Salah.

The MSMS Blue Waves improved to 2-4-1, 1-1 in Class 1A-2A-3A Region 4.

MSMS next plays at Nettleton Tuesday in a non-district tilt.
