MSMS Celebrates French Week
November 13, 2017
MSMS had a French-themed week, put on by the French Club, for the nationally recognized celebration of the romantic country’s rich and historic culture. Each day of this week, the sponsoring French Club planned an activity that was open to the entire school.
Monday’s theme called for the staff’s participation. Each teacher wore a name tag of a famous French scholar in his or her respective field of study. This was a way that all teachers could spread some knowledge about France that relates to what they teach.
Tuesday’s activity integrated the use of social media. An MSMS French Week Snapchat account was created where students could compete to guess famous French quotes and common phrases, and prizes were awarded to those who guessed first.
Wednesday focused on food, where the club sold crepes, a famous French dessert, to students for $1, with an additional .25 cents for an optional topping.
Thursday saw an evening event where a competition was held to see who had the best mime impression, which also had prizes for the winners.
To top off the week on Friday, students were encouraged to wear red, blue and white to represent the French flag.
Mrs. Lori Pierce is the sponsor for French Club. She excitedly said that this year’s crepes sales have been one of the best selling years she has seen.
Mrs. Pierce expressed, “I presented some ideas that had been done in years past…[the club members] chose to do some of those, and they also chose their own ideas.”
She made it clear that the students lead the week-long event, and she played a minimal part in the planning of it.
Junior Morgan Emokpae, the vice president of French Club, is excited to improve on this event.
“My main goal next year is to have overall more school involvement and more school-wide participation by both students and staff,” Emokpae said.
“Being the first time for me to participate in French week, it was a really good experience. I had a lot of fun making crepes, and I feel like we were able to spread knowledge of France to our classmates. My favorite part of French week was Monday. Getting the teachers involved in French week allowed information to reach many more students,” said junior Faith Ivy, a member of the French Club.
French week was a big success for the club, and in the future, the club hopes to put on more events to spread the knowledge of French history and traditions.
