The book “Shatter Me” brings out the inner fangirl/boy in all of us.

River Gordon, Staff Writer

“Shatter Me” has such a distinct cover page, an eye placed in the center of the page, that it draws a reader’s attention to it almost immediately. After diving into the book, the plot slowly unfolds, bringing forth new characters who have a lot to add to the story of the main character Juliette. The writer, Tahereh Mafi, brings a new side to the superhero world by showing Juliette’s introduction into the hero world.

Tahereh Mafi’s writing style is normal for an action and romance book, but she puts a little flair into it.  In the book, Mafi included strikethroughs when she was writing about Juliette’s thoughts. In an interview she did with Novel Novice in 2011, she stated that the strikethroughs represent the turmoil and chaos of Juliette’s mind. Because of Juliette’s isolation, she does not know how to express herself and cannot differentiate between the written and the spoken. As the story progresses, Juliette begins to understand how to express herself and gain confidence in voicing her words.

“Shatter Me” opens in a small room with one window, four walls, and 144 square feet. Trapped in a small room for 264 days without the touch of another human, Juliette yearns for the feeling of others, and her touch is lethal. Alone until a boy appears, she spends her day in silence writing in her notebook. In a matter of days, Juliette’s world changes when two men enter her life. As she gets to know Adam she realizes that he is a person from her past and knows about her powers. Adam becomes a part of Juliette’s life and helps her gain confidence. Because of this the strikethroughs in the book lessen as the book develops.

The book “Shatter Me” is a dystopian novel that will make your heart flutter with the romance between two characters. It will make you feel for her as she continues her journey that starts out alone. This book made me channel my inner fangirl as a reader I will not spoil the book. The series in general is well written and takes a creative standpoint on the superpowers. The dystopian world in a way represents our world today in countries that have a heavy government hand. Not only are the main characters relatable personally, but also to the world around us. If you have free time, which may be only a few minutes, the book “Shatter Me” is an easy read.
