Science Carnival
The Mississippi School for Math and Science held its annual Science Carnival for elementary schools in the Columbus, Mississippi, area. I felt that the Science Carnival was the perfect way to introduce science to children and to help them develop an understanding of why things happen. It showed them that there is a science behind everything and that it is not magic. Four groups at a time toured the Science Carnival, stopping at each station to learn something new. The children interacted very well while having a good time laughing and learning. It was interesting to hear the responses that the children gave when we asked them questions during our demonstrations. Some stations (including my favorite, Hydrophilic or Hydrophobic Interactions) even gave the children souvenirs to take home to show their parents what they had learned. The Science Carnival overall was a good experience. While working with children does not usually suit my personality, it gave me the opportunity to expose them to higher learning. There were not any casualties or unwanted situations. The children enjoyed learning and having fun all while being safe. This is something MSMS should continue to do to help enrich young children.
