Blue Waves Dive Into the North Half Swim Meet — Aurelia Caine, Assistant Sports Editor

The MSMS Blue Waves Swim Team traveled to Delta State’s Aquatic Center on Oct. 14 to compete in the 2017 North Half Swim Meet.

Beckett Voges-Haupt, the boys’ team captain, felt the pressure when competing at the North Half competition.

“The pressure was definitely more intense for North Half because it decided who qualified for state or not. I felt the most nervous on the relays because of the team aspect and I was more aware of the competition,” said Voges-Haupt.

Captain Voges-Haupt and the rest of the team were fatigued from the day long swim meet.

“For the short races I had tons of energy but on the 100 freestyles I  was exhausted afterwards,” added Vogues-Haupt.

There were lots of fans at the swim meet supporting their schools. Family and friends filled the bleachers all of Saturday to watch the intense races. Rashad Harbin, a senior at the local Cleveland Central High School, expressed how he views swim meets.

“My brother is a swimmer, so I’m pretty familiar with how swim meets work. Depending on the event that is going on, it determines how the crowd reacts. The quicker and faster races are then the more exciting it is. The crowd goes crazy for their team from the dive all the way to finish,” says Harbin. He also adds, “Swimmers really have no idea what place they’re in while their swimming. They just swim as fast as they can until they reach the finish line. The only downfall to meets is that they are really loud.”

The results have not been released for this meet yet. The state competition is the next meet on the Blue Waves’ agenda on Oct. 28 ; they will be seeking a state title.
