On September 18, the students of MSMS and the community of Columbus took part in College View, an event showcasing colleges across the country.

This event, which included nationwide collegiate personalities, was held at the Trotter Convention Center and is very popular among members of the community. Students and parents alike received the opportunity to speak with representatives from a wide array of colleges from all corners of America. This experience contributes to the students’ decision of where to apply and exposed them to new places that they may have never previously known of.

MSMS senior, John Bowlin, was among those personally affected by the event.

“New York University has always been my dream college, but going abroad is something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember. At College View, I learned from the representatives and pamphlets at the NYU booth that I could spend my entire NYU career abroad,” Bowlin explained.

MSMS counselor, Dr. Heath Stevens, was also enthusiastic about the event and the impact it had on students and Columbus residents.

“I think many of our students and students from the community are only thinking about the community colleges or the eight major public universities depending on where you live in Mississippi, initially because that’s just what they’re used to. The big impact is walking around and speaking to a representative from a place you’ve never heard of and learning that they have a lot of the things you might be interested in. So, it can potentially expand your college options and you may even learn about scholarship opportunities you may not have otherwise heard of,” Dr. Steven stated.

MSMS senior, Tate Howard, felt that while the previous year’s College View had better college attendance, it was still an eye-opening and immersive experience.

“College View has opened my eyes to schools I never knew existed. I personally thought that fewer colleges were represented this year and one university from last year’s College View was not in attendance at the most recent event. The location, however, lends itself to a more successful experience,” Howard expressed.

Regardless of past experiences, the MSMS student body and the residents of Columbus all look forward to the potentially life-changing event of College View.
