The Year’s First Senate Meeting Held
September 4, 2017
As the juniors are still adjusting to MSMS life, some also took up the responsibility of representing the junior class in the Senate. After being elected to their positions by their fellow classmates, new senators recently had their first Senate meeting of the year on August 29, 2017.
Harpreet Singh, SGA Vice President, opened the meeting by telling the junior senators the regulations and standards of being a senator, including what the meetings will consist of and what is expected out of them.
“On behalf of the SGA officers and Mrs. Brown, we look forward to a useful and productive year and helping the school positively,” Singh suggested as an ending note, before giving the podium to Mrs. Brown, SGA sponsor.
After Singh’s ending remarks, Mrs. Brown inspired the juniors to question the handbook and propose bills that will help the school in the years to come. She avidly expressed the fact that she is not arguing against SGA, but instead supports questioning the rules in the handbook.
“I am here as the sponsor of SGA. I try to stay out of your way as much as I can. I will answer questions only if you direct a question to me. I won’t freely offer my advice or opinion because I don’t want to stop the flow of what you’re trying to do,” Mrs. Brown stated.
Lilian Le, a junior senator, is very excited for the upcoming year and cannot wait to propose ideas that could make an impact on the student handbook. She wants to put all of her focus on the suggestions and concerns from the people she represents.
“I’m excited to see the bills that may or may not come into effect,” Le expressed.
Another senator, Gabby Kennedy, has been elected as a senator for two years. She is extremely involved in SGA and has experience outside of school in the political field.
Kennedy expressed much excitement for the upcoming year stating, “I was a senator last year and am so glad that I was given the opportunity again. I’m really excited to work with the other senators and make some changes happen this year!”
