The Democratic students of MSMS are enthusiastically diving into projects and forums.

For example, this year the Young Democrats Club is planning on running and assisting registration drives throughout Columbus. The members of the club are also looking forward to holding a political debate with both the Young Republicans Club and the Young Independents Club.

The club plans to educate themselves and others about politically charged current events and how they relate to foreign affairs.

Senior member, Harpreet Singh, explains the purpose of the club. “The club serves its purpose of reaching out to the local community and educating the students of MSMS. Furthermore, it’s great to just experience what the club has to offer with my peers,” Singh expresses.

Mr. Chuck Yarborough, the Young Democrat sponsor since 1995, expresses how he feels about the club and further explains its usual activities.

“Young Democrats, like all of our political clubs, offers students a chance to educate themselves about politics and government and the issues surrounding each. Young Democrats sponsor voter registration drives for both MSMS and MUW students, host speakers, sponsor political watch events and much more depending on the year,” says Yarborough.

On Saturday, August 26, the Young Democrats visited a seminar by Mississippi Votes at the 929 Coffee Bar in Starkville. Mississippi Votes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing voter turnout within Mississippi for local and federal government elections. The Democrats learned how to canvas effectively and increase voter turnout.

Junior club member Lori Feng shows her enthusiasm for joining the club. “It provides high schoolers with a more in-depth experience with addressing political issues. Especially at my old school, people would never be able to express their opinions so openly, and so the community created by these various political clubs really gives students a chance to bond and initiate change within the political atmosphere,” Feng says.
