Students Buzz in for Science Bowl Interest Meeting
August 28, 2017
The MSMS Science Bowl team is getting ready for a new season, with a trip to the highest level of competition on their minds.
The Science Bowl Team operates similarly to a quiz bowl team. Questions are based on six topics: biology, chemistry, physics, Earth and space, math, and energy. Because the Department of Energy sponsors the program, questions about energy resources make an appearance in the competition.
According to Dr. Elizabeth Morgan, chemistry instructor and Science Bowl sponsor, two teams of five will be participating at regional competition on February 16, 2018, held annually at MUW.
The MSMS Science Bowl team has made it to semi-finals for the past two years. but has not advanced to nationals. Science Bowl team member, William Johnson says, “We have to put everything into it, and actually try to do our best in order to win.”
One goal Dr. Morgan has for the club is to go to the national level of competition, which is held in Washington D.C. in the spring annually year.
Dr. William Odom, biology instructor, also expressed that winning nationals is his goal.
Many students, like junior Hamilton Wan, are excited about the science bowl team. Wan says “I enjoy the challenge of answering science questions and being able to test and expand the limits of my knowledge.”
