For parents wishing to experience the MSMS academic life and spend valuable time with their children, MSMS hosted a Parents Day on Saturday, August 19.

Similar to an open house event, Parents Day serves the purpose of connecting parents to teachers and classes. Equipped with their son’s or daughter’s daily schedules, parents swarmed the halls of Hooper Academic Building, Shackleford and even the residential halls on a mission to gain understanding into their children’s new life away from home.

Spike Harris, Coordinator for Admissions, explained the importance of the day.

“Parents’ Day is an opportunity for parents to come back to campus because it’s been quite some time since they’ve been here to see their juniors and seniors. They actually get to follow their child around and see what classes they’re taking, they get an opportunity to actually work on Powerschool, and they get to meet the faculty that they may not have already met. So Parents’ Day is a great opportunity to see what the typical day for their child is here at MSMS,” Harris expressed.

The parents received the chance to hold discussions with the residential staff, walk around campus, enjoy lunch with their child, and meet with the No. 1 ranked faculty, as ranked by Niche.com.

Dr. Philip Benge, MSMS Mathematics instructor, described the topics he covered while parents attended his class.

“Today I’ve had a wonderful time getting to meet the parents and guardians of the students in my class. We went over the structure of the courses, how to direct their student to get help with all the office hours and tutorial opportunities for their students. Also, we went over friendly reminders for the students to get a good night’s sleep, eat three meals a day, and get help as soon as possible so that problems don’t fester and so they can mitigate the deficiencies in their knowledge as soon as possible,” Benge stated.

Throughout the day, the MSMS PLUS group was on hand to meet with the parents collectively and in regional groups in order to discuss the ways in which parents can take part in future events.

Several parents also chose to display school spirit by purchasing the merchandise on sale, including sweatshirts, blankets, t-shirts, bumper stickers, water bottles and much more.

The school community believes that the weekend shows that parents are also vital pieces of “the puzzle.”
