Ala-La-Miss Competition Wraps Up
March 27, 2017
MSMS students wrapped up their competition in the Ala-La-Miss competition last Monday.
The competition consists of weekly tests, taken Monday afternoons in Hooper Auditorium. Each test consists of six questions, ranging from fairly simple to mind-numbingly difficult, and lasts for about half an hour. Schools from across three states—Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi—compete, with each school sending in its top six scores from the week’s tests.
“Before the last one, we were tied with Jackson Prep, but we haven’t gotten results back (for this week) yet,” said Leah Pettit, a junior who regularly participates in the event. The previous week’s round of tests were the last of this school year.
“Usually there’s two or three (questions) that are really easy but there’s some trick in the question wording to make you make a mistake, then two that are kind of medium, and the last one’s really hard,” Pettit continued.
Mariana Strawn is a junior at MSMS, who competes regularly in Ala-La-Miss. Of the competition, she said, “The experience is really great, it’s great to have all the people around you, it helps you compete…I personally think that we’ll do really well just based on the scores that we had and all the people that are competing.”
“Those problems are really (darn) hard…I’m usually confident on about one,” said Griffin Stewart, who also competes regularly with Ala-La-Miss. “We did have a smaller pool of competitors for the last one, so it’s unsure if we’ll beat Jackson Prep.”
