Album Review: “Electric Soul Unity” by Happy Diving
August 29, 2016
Many bands strive to make a perfect record: a record where each song could be a hit; but, it still flows together seamlessly. A record where the hooks pile up end on end until all that remains is a monolithic testament to songwriting. A record where the band plays tight, the rhythm section locks in, and the leads are scorching. With “Electric Soul Unity,” Happy Diving have managed to do just that.
The funny part is they almost seem to do it effortlessly. Sure, the instruments kick and thrash their way through the tracks, with squeals of feedback filling all the silence. But the dreamy feel of many of the tracks, coupled with lead singer Matt Berry’s calm drawl, help to provide a nice contrast and a feeling of smooth confidence.
However, the album is more than just noise and poppy feelings. Happy Diving venture into new territory here, whether it be the extreme dynamic shifts of “Head Spell” or the acoustic jam “Unknown Feeling.” Not to say that anything was wrong with their current approach; Happy Diving are one of the few bands that can make such a constant aural assault sound so intoxicating. The band usually sounds like one big group, forming a devastating wall of distorted guitars and solid bass, calmly and assuredly backed by the drums.
“Head Spell” seems to be the centerpiece of the record, one of the most ascendant pieces of power-pop released in years. Alternating between a quiet/loud dynamic in the verses, it eventually goes full blast in a chorus that sweeps the rug out from underneath and leaves you stranded, suspended in air. Happy Diving are not going to teach you how to fly, but at their best they leave you floating.
