Mu Alpha Theta Inducts New Officers

Mu Alpha Theta (MAO) inducted multiple new officers into its ranks on May 5. Mu Alpha Theta members participated in many activities this year, such as participating in the Ala-La-Miss competition and COMAP math modeling contest as well as hosting a math tournament for other high school students. The organization has varying officer positions to handle the different outreach and competition aspects of the club; this new group of officers will help with all of these various activities, with officers participating in everything from tutorials to community outreach.

When asked how he felt about the new officers, current president Nathan Barlow stated, “As one of just a few people who had a say in the officer selection, I can say pretty confidently that this is a strong group of officers.”

The rising junior officers will work with other organization members to prepare for state convention and compete in regional and national math competitions.  This year, the MSMS MAO organization placed third overall at state convention.

Historian Joy Carino, who worked on the scrapbook and other items for MAO state convention, said “I’m proud of the new officers, and I think they’re great fits. I’m sure they will be hardworking, dedicated and hopefully non-procrastinators.”

Chris Slagell admits he is honored to have been selected as incoming president. “The selection lets me know that the teachers trust me to lead one of the biggest clubs at MSMS,” he said.

Slagell hopes to increase participation in the club next year, as well as pass down his interest for math and the competitions to the upcoming juniors.

Haley Hsu, new vice president of outreach, expressed similar sentiments, stating “I am very honored to be selected and am super excited for the upcoming year.”
