Shanna Rainey is MSMS’s new academic administrative assistant, replacing former assistant Nisa King, who was promoted to registrar this summer.
When finding King’s replacement, Director for Academic Affairs Thomas Easterling said Rainey’s profile stood out the most because of her broad skill set and experience with students.
“Her work experiences showed that she had a wide range of skills that could be brought to bear,” he said. “Her references gave absolutely glowing assessments of her work with them. It also became clear that she had a way with kids.”
After graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi with a journalism degree, Rainey worked at WDAM, a radio station near Hattiesburg. There, she realized her true passion was for academia, liking the collaborative, amiable environment teaching brought as opposed to broadcasting. Prior to joining MSMS, Rainey ran her own childcare business in Petal. She returned to school at Mississippi State University to earn her Master of Education in 2024.
While working at MSMS, Rainey said she has already made strong connections with the students.
“A lot of [students] come in just to talk and listen, and [they’re] so sweet,” Rainey said. “I’m in my element for sure with this age group since secondary education is what my journey [is in].”
Junior Elissa Wang said Rainey has a calming presence and an easy-going personality that makes communication very enjoyable.
“Ms. Shanna cares about everyone around her, not only the students that come to her office, but also visitors, other teachers and so on,” Wang said. “I am very grateful that I get to work with her every week, and I believe her kindness and warmth will shine throughout her career.”
Rainey’s impact at MSMS has already been felt despite her short tenure. Easterling said he appreciates the newest member of the Office of Academic Affairs.
“Her first couple of months here have highlighted her quick embrace of the MSMS community,” Easterling said. “She knows the four ideals and, I think, the tune to the alma mater. She can call on students by name when she sees them in the lobby. She has already done so much! I’m so happy she’s here!”
Rainey said she appreciates her new position and feels at home at MSMS.
“I love my job here, and I know this is where I’m meant to be,” Rainey said.
