Sports and clubs at MSMS require a commitment to meetings, events, work outside of meetings and time. The Vision invited the leaders of all MSMS extracurriculars to introduce what their clubs or sports do and their levels of required time and commitment to allow upcoming juniors to roughly plan their involvement.
The Vision lightly edited the responses below:
Archery
Hello, Class of 2027! I’m Claire Rhee, your archery captain and founding member for this year. We are currently looking for a coach, but there will still be a team. Being a part of the team doesn’t necessarily require prior experience. The team would be able to meet semi-regularly, learn proper form and prepare for local and statewide tournaments. Whether you’re trying something new or bringing past experience, this is a great way to build skill, confidence and community. I hope you’ll join!

Hi, juniors! I’m Cassie van Riessen, and I am your Art Club president for this year! Art Club is a great way to decompress from academic activities! Our club’s outreach extends beyond Asian students, as we also plan to host multi-cultural events to help students find their community and discover cultures that may be new to them. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the beauty of Asian culture!

Welcome to MSMS!

Whether you’ve been running for years or just want to challenge yourself with something new, we’d love to have you on the cross-country team. You do not need to try out to be on the team. Cross-country is all about endurance, mental toughness and supporting each other through every mile. We meet after school from 4:15-5:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday. If you are interested, please reach out to me at [email protected] or Spencer at [email protected] to be added to the GroupMe for optional summer runs.

East Asian Dance Club
Welcome, MSMS Class of 2027! My name is Rina Xu, and I will be the president of East Asian Dance Club for the 2025-2026 school year. Music and dance are two essential components of cultures all around the world, allowing people to express parts of both themselves and the history long before them. The main goal of EADC is to give MSMS students a chance to learn more about these unique forms of artistic expression found in East Asia through various games and physical activities. We plan to meet once every few months for about an hour; at least two meetings during the first semester and one in the second. We hope you enjoy the ideas we have in store!
Engineering Club
Hi, Class of 2027! I’m JT Sistrunk, president of Engineering Club this year. In Engineering Club, we’ll explore a wide range of engineering disciplines, from mechanical to civil, electrical and beyond. No experience is needed, just your curiosity and creativity!
English Outreach
Hello, juniors! I’m Emma Bernard, the president of English Outreach. If you’re interested in serving the community, we’d love to have you join us! This club is also an awesome way to get volunteer hours. We primarily participate in book-related events and support our downtown public library. We have a program held every Thursday called Reading Buddies, where we read to children. This is a low-commitment club, so there’s no pressure or requirement to attend events. I would love to welcome y’all as English Outreach volunteers.
Envirothon
Hi, juniors! I’m Cassie van Riessen, and I am your Envirothon president for this year! We will go on hikes to learn about nature and conservation! We will have a few meetings in the fall, but most of our meetings will be during the second semester to prepare for competition in the spring! You can join for the fun in nature and then decide if you would like to compete! I hope you’ll get your hands dirty in Envirothon!

If you like earning shiny medals while building on your academic foundations, you’ll fit right in! We would love to have in FBLA.

Golf Club
Hi, juniors! This is Anna Anderson, the president of Golf Club, and I just wanted to let y’all know a little about MSMS’s Golf Club! This is a very low-commitment club that is relatively new, so we’re working out some kinks! Members can expect opportunities to play golf, practice, connect with others who share their interest and stay updated on local golfing opportunities. There will be a small entry fee to cover the cost of the country club fee, and you will likely need your own clubs! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me and ask!
Gender-Sexuality Alliance
Welcome, Class of 2027! I’m Belsy Soto, your Gender-Sexuality Alliance president for this year, but y’all can call me Ben. In GSA, we’ll provide a safe space for those in the LGBTQ+ community and those who support these individuals, as well as the education in proper terms and behavior towards those of the community. The GSA provides a peaceful community and a place for students to connect with others who are going through similar situations. As of now, the club will meet once or twice a month for roughly 30 minutes to an hour. Let me know if you have any questions!

Junior Class Officers
Hello, MSMS Class of 2027! My name is Nina, and I was the junior class president this past year. As a junior class officer, your main job is planning prom. You will also organize other events to help with student life. Some things we did last year were Valentine’s Day candy grams and putting up encouraging signs during exam week. There is no definitive number of meetings you need to have, but I would recommend meeting every week or every other week to stay accountable. I would also recommend meeting more frequently during the prom planning process. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at [email protected]!
Math Tutoring
Hey, juniors! If you love collaborating with your classmates on problems, you should definitely consider becoming a math tutor! Math tutors go to at least one math teacher’s tutorials a week to assist any students who need math help. Starting from the second semester, you’ll make yourself available for questions and guidance from 7-8 p.m. This is also a great way to hone your math skills! There is no better way to learn than to teach, so become a math tutor!
Math Committee Heads
Hi, rising juniors! We’re Colin Chung, Jake Heisler and Claire Rhee, the Mu Alpha Theta Math Tournament chairs for this year. Each year, we and the MSMS math department choose a handful of standout juniors to write math problems for the MSMS-hosted Mu Alpha Theta competition. If chosen, you’ll write five questions a week for five weeks in Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Potpourri or Interschool. No matter which subject you get, you’ll have lots of fun expressing your mathematical creativity and your math skills will certainly grow! We can’t wait to meet the selected juniors for this year!

Hey, Class of 2027! I’m Julie Yang, co-president of Math Outreach alongside Eduardo Gonzalez and Anthony Nguyen. We host bi-weekly Thursday programs at public libraries, help write problems and run a middle school math competition. Our main volunteering events include Math Superstars during the Science Carnival and the Mu Alpha Theta and Math Tournament at MSMS. Meetings follow two schedules — Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays or Tuesdays and Thursdays — each totaling three hours per week. Meetings are held in Lauren Zarandona’s classroom. It’s important to note these meetings are class periods, so they may interfere with your class schedule or vice versa. Juniors don’t officially join until second semester but can still volunteer at certain events. We can’t wait to meet all of you!
Mock Trial
Hi, Class of 2027! I’m Jake Heisler, your Mock Trial president for this year. We also prepare you for the courtroom setting by competing with other Mock Trial teams at our district competition. Plan to meet once a week during the first semester for about an hour and a half and twice a week during the second semester in the mock courtroom on campus as we approach our district competition.
Model Security Council
Hello to the Class of 2027! We are Anderson Chaney and Srujan Chinnapureddy, the co-presidents of the MSMS Mississippi Model Security Council. In MMSC, you represent a country, called a delegation, and draft a resolution about said delegation with a current United Nations-related issue, then create a solution. You will then defend your resolution in a room with others representing their delegations and get the majority vote for your resolution to pass. This club will teach you how to draft an effective and compelling resolution, gather information on world issues, compose your actions in a conference and, most importantly, have fun! We meet regularly every other Monday to prepare for the annual Mississippi Model Security Council at Mississippi State University. We hope you are excited for a year of passion and fun!

Hello, juniors! I’m Grant Zhang, this year’s competition president for Mu Alpha Theta. Whether you’re a seasoned problem-solver hoping to participate in competitions throughout the year or just somebody looking for occasional fun from math games and puzzles, MAO is the perfect place for you! For those who aren’t interested in math — and clearly haven’t met the MSMS math faculty — we would love to have you display your artistic talents through helping with the MAO scrapbook. Everyone can find something they enjoy at MAO, even if it’s just spending time with friends. Meetings are every Thursday. Don’t miss out, join MAO!

Our task is to provide fun events for the community and make sure MSMS is a hospitable place for everyone! This club was very low maintenance in my junior year, and I assume we will do around three to four events during my senior year as well. We do not have weekly meetings and only meet when necessary, such as for organizing events. Thank you for considering us, and we all have big hopes for you!
Robotics
Hi, Class of 2027! The Robotics captains are looking forward to meeting you! In Robotics, you will join either the building team, the coding team or the engineering notebook team. Everyone works together to produce the best possible robot for Push Back, the 2025-2026 VEX game. Robotics teaches you exceptional communication skills and valuable building techniques, all while offering real-world robotics experience. We meet every Monday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. (and in the dorm building on nights before competitions). No experience is required, but you will be required to take the Introduction to Robotics class. We all hope that you guys are ready for a big year!
Run Club
Howdy, juniors! Your Run Club presidents for this year are Christian Butler and Allen Lewis. In Run Club, we play field games like ultimate frisbee, capture the flag and kickball. We do run a mile prior to playing, but it’s optional, so no biggie. Run Club meets each Wednesday after school. We’re looking forward to meeting y’all!

We plan to host events like Red Ribbon Week and Bullying Prevention Seminars. Meetings will be held once a month!

Knowledge about math and science is all that is required for Science Bowl, so as students at the Mississippi School for Math and Science, you are already the perfect fit! Show off everything you’ve learned in an exciting, buzz-in trivia game. You might just find yourself on an all-expenses-paid vacation to nationals. Join Science Bowl and show other schools that MSMS’s name isn’t just for show!

Even if you don’t intend on becoming an editor for the magazine, we hope you consider making a submission!

Hope to see you at the pool!

Hey, juniors! I’m Charlie Martin, the president of Tabletop Gaming Club this year. Also, at the first meet of each semester, we will have sign-up sheets for student-led Dungeons & Dragons groups that are typically pretty welcoming of new players.
