MSMS students elected senior class and Student Government Association officers in a campus-wide vote held in Nissan Auditorium on May 6.
Anderson Chaney was named senior class president, with Reynolds McCaleb as vice president, Brayden Smith as secretary, Poppy Bowling as treasurer and Sophia Dean as historian.
For SGA, John Broome was elected president, Jake Heisler as vice president and Aanya Banga as secretary.
Chaney, who previously served as student government president at his home school, said his campaign focused on collaborative projects.
“I want to do more for MSMS than I would [have] at my old school,” he said, citing proposals like a class time capsule and planting a Ginkgo biloba tree with a plaque. “The president has a say in the class gift, so I’ll collaborate with others to make it happen.”
Chaney said he was grateful to his classmates for motivating him after his prior loss at junior class officer elections.
“I know it was a close call. I hope I can serve everyone,” he said. “Juniors and seniors encouraged me to run again and were very supportive.”
McCaleb said he chose to run for vice president to leverage his strengths.
“For JCO, I ran for president because that position was mainly over prom, but [for SCO], the vice president is more of a helper,” he said. “I feel like I don’t have the best capability to be the leader, but I can definitely help.”
McCaleb said he worked to avoid repeating past campaign missteps to win the senior class election
“I posted on social media immediately and spoke up more,” he said. “I had [my speech] written days in advance and practiced constantly, but when I got on stage, it all blurred. I don’t remember giving it at all.”
Bowling, re-elected as treasurer, said she leaned on her JCO experience.
“I ran because I had a lot of fun doing it last year and wanted to continue,” she said. “This year, I tried a lot harder on my speech.”
Chaney said his priority as the upcoming senior class president is unity.
“It’s not that I won — I was elected. I’m here to represent everyone’s ideas,” Chaney said.
McCaleb added he would prioritize fun.
“This isn’t about titles,” he said. “It’s about making sure we all look back and say, ‘That was the best year.’”
