The MSMS Funky Force esports team claimed its second consecutive Mario Kart 8 Deluxe state championship on April 26, defeating Newton High School in a tightly contested final.
The team — composed of seniors Aarya Patel and Lillian Adcock, and juniors Le’Baudrio Bridgeford and Israel Cecil — finished the season undefeated after losing only one match in 2023. MSMS advanced through the semifinals against Pontotoc High before facing Newton High, last year’s runner-up, in a series of matches marked by repeated ties.
“We tied with Tiger Nation [Newton High] at least three times. It pushed us to adapt,” said Bridgeford, a first-year competitor.
Team members credited their success to independent training, focusing on track strategies and item usage without going through formal practices.
Patel, frequently observed during live streams for his consistent performance, and Cecil often led practice runs, while Adcock and Bridgeford prioritized defensive tactics.
“I’d hit opponents to create space for my teammates,” Cecil said, referencing his disruptive play style.
The team ended the final race with its “Funky Time” tradition, selecting the character Funky Kong. Charles Martin, who attended as the team’s mascot, said, “I didn’t play, but these guys earned this win.”
During the semifinals, Adcock said she exchanged greetings with a Pontotoc player who noted her gender.
“She said, ‘You’re a girl!’ and I said, ‘Yeah!’” Adcock said. “It was a small moment but meaningful.”
MSMS has now secured four championships since 2023. While seniors are moving on this year, the juniors aim to continue the streak next year.
“I’m going for five finals appearances,” Cecil said.
