The Blue Waves soccer teams tallied a combined seven goals in convincing victories against Philadelphia on Jan. 7.
The Goen team won 5-2, with all goals coming from junior Isabel Beckman, while Frazer won 2-0 with goals from senior Daniel Van and junior Om Patel.
For Goen, the win came at a crucial time. The team needed an impressive scoring performance to maintain their playoff hopes. In a sport where the number of goals scored dictates playoff positioning, Beckman’s performance was imperative to the Blue Waves’ postseason push.
Beckman said Coach Sam Yarborough’s halftime speech gave them the second effort they needed.
“[Yarborough] told us that if we didn’t win by three goals, our season was basically over,” Beckman said.
The Jan. 9 soccer games against Vardaman were canceled due to severe winter weather. The Blue Waves soccer teams are expected to play next at home against Winona today.
