MSMS Frazer soccer team ended its Dec. 2 game against Kemper County High School after the Blue Waves scored 10 unanswered goals and forced the mercy rule to be applied
Senior Drew Dowdy and junior Om Patel each scored three goals. Dowdy scored twice within the first three minutes, setting the tone for a productive offensive effort. Senior Daniel Van scored two goals, while junior Allen Lewis and Jake Heisler scored one. Heisler’s goal finalized the 10-0 score and ended the game.
“We scored three goals in the first 10 minutes and were playing quite well,” Frazer team captain Yash Malhotra said. “It was [barbeque] chicken from there. I also believe this game was a good representation of our abilities to play well together and execute.”
Frazer built a 7-0 lead by halftime, allowing most of the starting lineup to rest for large parts of the game. They returned briefly at the start of the second half to solidify their performance before being rotated out again.
“The game started with Drew scoring within the first minute and a half,” junior Acyn Harrell said. “It just kept building from there. I thought we did well as a team, but I don’t think we should have won by that much personally.”
Harrell said he was conflicted about the unusual dynamic of the match.
“The mercy rule is kind of bittersweet,” Harrell said. “I was a big fan of going to the mercy rule early, honestly. I wish we had stopped at seven goals.”
Patel said Frazer’s ability to exploit weaknesses in Kemper County’s defense gave them an advantage.
“Their backline kind of fell apart after the first few minutes,” Patel said.
Harrell also said that Kemper County’s players’ inexperience became apparent during the game.
“I don’t think many of them know how to play soccer,” Harrell said. “The goalie looked like he was getting coached by the referee on how to do goal kicks. They’re good at football, but I don’t think they practice soccer much.”
Despite the lopsided scoreline, Harrell said the Frazer team was still dedicated to improvement.
“We played well, but I don’t think it was necessary to win by that much,” Harrell said.
MSMS Frazer and Goen soccer teams will face Philadelphia away on Dec. 12. Goen and Frazer teams play at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
