MSMS formed a new color guard club to allow students to express themselves creatively.
Co-Presidents Lillie Thompson and Cratin Quinnelly and Vice President Jolanna Jackson held an interest meeting on Sept. 30 for the new club in which members toss flags in the air while trying to memorize counts during a routine.
People commonly use sabers, traditional flags, swing flags and rifles in their performances.
“A lot of people missed being able to have that opportunity [to] be with a team they really connected with,” Thompson said about why they started the club.
Quinnelly said the club presented an opportunity to cope with the constant stress of MSMS.
“I had poor mental health and self-esteem issues throughout high school,” Quinnelly said. “Color guard is giving me a way to vent my feelings while performing really beautiful pieces.”
Jackson said she is excited to help grow the color guard with fundraisers for competitions next year.
“I wasn’t much involved in the club-making process, but I was very interested in recruiting people to be in it,” Jackson said. “My personal goal is just to help with getting the club started, so we can possibly compete next year.”
