The MSMS Blue Waves swim team secured multiple placements in individual and relay events at the MHSAA Class I Swim Championships on Oct. 19.
Senior and Frazer co-captain Max Thompson finished eighth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.69. Senior and Frazer co-captain Harrison Shao finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.79 and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:16.07.
The Frazer team placed fourth in the men’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:03.77 and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:50.76.
Swimmers reached set times in the morning preliminaries before advancing to the state meet.
Junior Grant Zhang said he felt good about the swim meet and beat his personal record by five seconds.
“I didn’t think I had any chance of making finals, so I sprinted the prelims as hard as I could,” Zhang said.
Junior Cassie van Riessen, who finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 30.63, said the meet was a great experience.
“It was a long day of swimming races in the morning until [noon] and then coming back at 4:00 [p.m.] for finals, but we really showed improvement as a team,” van Riessen said.
Junior John Broome said the team’s efforts showed at the state meet.
“I think the state meet was the culmination of an entire season of hard work and a lot of fun. Throughout the season, we endured tiring practices,” Broome said. “Ultimately, the work we put in at practice paid off with how well we did at state. I am looking forward to next season and will miss the seniors who swam this year.”
Senior and Goen captain Kayla Williams said she was satisfied with how the season turned out, especially since the team had come a long way together.
“It was a great way to close out both the season and competitive swimming for me because I had so much fun with my teammates,” Williams said. “I’m glad I got to watch my junior teammates swim at state, and I know if they keep working hard, they’ll be back next year.”
