The MSMS swim team secured numerous qualifications for North Half at the Sept. 24 Tupelo Invitational meet.

Swimmers competed in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays, earning qualifying times in both events.

Junior John Broome said the relay teams performed beyond expectations all due to their hard work.

“We had some insecurities about whether some of the relays would make North Half, but all our relays, except for one, qualified. I give all that credit to my teammates. A lot of people stepped up and worked hard at practice,” Broome said.

Junior Nicolas Palagi said the team did noticeably better than its last meet.

“The team definitely improved [in the 200-yard relays]. Reynolds, Grant, Raymond — they all did really well,” Palagi said.

Broome credited the team’s victories at Tupelo, as well as his personal successes in qualifying in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, to the guidance and support he received from the captains.

“They have shown tremendous leadership and helped us so much,” Broome said. “We have been able to learn a lot about the strokes we swim and the techniques we need to perfect. The captains have been instrumental in our performance.”

Senior Michelle Yang swam the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. Yang said she was proud to reach her best times for the season and excited to see the team’s performance at North Half.

“Overall, everyone kept a positive attitude and swam well at the meet,” Yang said. “We trained hard for this season, and the effort showed in the pool.”

The MSMS swim team will compete in the North Half meet at Delta State University on Oct. 5.
