Hoping to expand students’ interests in various colleges, MSMS hosted its annual College View on Sept. 9. Juniors and seniors gathered in Pohl Gymnasium to explore colleges across the nation and gain insight into the variety of majors available.
Participating colleges and universities included in-state schools such as Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi, along with out-of-state institutions like the University of Alabama, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Chicago.
Junior Vincent Young said College View offered him a chance to explore different opportunities from each college and see if they matched his standards.
“It gives us a great chance that many other students don’t have,” Young said. “Schools like Vanderbilt, Harvard and Ole Miss have many opportunities that can interest students.”
Besides providing information about individual universities, the event allowed students to step outside of MSMS and envision life post-graduation.
Junior Ainsley Dew said she enjoyed the diversity and comfortable atmosphere of the event.
“Everyone at the booths was very kind and open to answering all of our many questions,” Dew said. “There was also a variety in the colleges. Not all of them were mainly STEM colleges. There were a good bit of [liberal arts] focused schools.”
Along with adding colleges, some students removed colleges from their list.
Although senior Megan Colley enjoyed her experience at College View and appreciated the helpful college admissions representatives there, she said she wished more schools were able to attend.
“All of the representatives were knowledgeable and willing to answer questions about their schools. It helped me discover universities I had considered, as well as take some that I was considering off of my list,” Colley said. “[However,] I do wish more schools were able to attend, as it would’ve helped [to talk to] more representatives from schools that I’m applying to.”
Senior Joey Knight said College View helped him narrow down his college choices and gave him an overview of unfamiliar colleges.
“I had the opportunity to greet numerous colleges and some I’d never heard of before but they interested me. This was a valuable experience as it helped me narrow down my college list,” Knight said. “I also think that this sort of college view is not common in Mississippi, so I feel greatly privileged to be able to attend College View as an MSMS student.”
